A Phenomenological Study on the Experience of Caregivers for the Elderly with Dementia and Participation in Community Music Activities

Abstract
This is a qualitative study aiming to find out the meaning and essence of what participants experienced in music activities focused on local community for the purpose of integration within the local community for adults who are providing care for the elderly with dementia. In-depth interviews were conducted with 9 people who participated in music activities for a total of 15 sessions, this was analyzed by applying the analysis method of Moutakas(1994). In the research process, questions were first constructed through an open-ended questionnaire, and then experiences were described in detail through in-depth interviews. The results are as follows. First, what they experienced was ¡®internal change in individuals¡¯ and ¡®changes in extended relationships¡¯. ¡®Internal change in individuals¡¯ was shown as ¡®emotional change¡¯, ¡®physical change¡¯, and ¡®self change¡¯. And ¡®change in expanded relationships¡¯ was shown as ¡®understanding of others¡¯, ¡®change of relationship with the deceased¡¯, ¡®change of family relationship¡¯ and ¡®change in the community¡¯. Second, as for the meaning of musical experience, it is change and Expansion: ¡®healing emotions¡¯, ¡®meeting the inner child¡¯, and ¡®connecting to the community¡¯. The result of this study is meaningful as basic data for the development of various program related to music activities in local community in Korea by understanding the experience of participants in music activities focused on local community
